The health and wellness markets are often abuzz with new trends. And while many of the treatments and home remedies that claim to quell pain and promote health are, shall we say, less than effective, one particular product seems to deliver on its promise. CBD, or cannabidiol oil, is currently flying off the shelves in states where medical marijuana is legal. And consumers are using it to treat a host of problems, ranging from seizures to sleeplessness. Find out more about CBD oil and how it could help you live your best life.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is created by extracting a non-psychoactive concentrate from the seeds and stalks of cannabis plants. Cannabidiol is a chemical compound of the cannabinoid family, the most well known version of which is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabinoids work by interacting with certain neurons in the brain. Depending on what receptor is affected, users will experience a different reaction and varying health and wellness benefits.

Health Benefits of CBD

Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t change the user’s state of mind or produce the “high” sensation that’s common with traditional forms of marijuana. However, research shows that this substance provides a host of benefits to both physical and mental health. The National Cancer Institute, for instance, has found that CBD can reduce the nausea and vomiting patients often suffer as a result of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. And a study from the Journal of Experimental Medicine revealed that CBD given to mice and rats reduced chronic pain and inflammation. Scientists went so far as to predict that CBD could be useful in treating chronic pain in humans.

Anecdotally, people have used CBD oil to treat a wide range of afflictions, including acne, seizures, and arthritis. More research is needed to determine all the ways in which this substance could ease pain and improve quality of life.

CBD and Mental Health

The effects of CBD oil extend beyond the physical. In fact, many CBD aficionados utilize the substance for its mental health benefits. Because CBD reduces activity in the limbic system, the part of the brain that determines many of our emotional responses, it can be effective in treating anxiety and easing depression. Additionally, CBD oil can help with insomnia and improving quality of sleep. People are even using CBD products to ease fear and nervousness in their dogs.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Clearly, CBD oil has helped many people enjoy lives free from physical and emotional pain. However, you might not want to run out to the store just yet. Just because CBD is legal in certain states doesn’t mean it’s legal at the federal level, and those who choose to purchase this drug can still be prosecuted. In fact, as recently as November, a Drug Enforcement Agency spokesperson said that violating federal drug laws meant risking arrest and prosecution. However, he went on to reveal that the DEA did not intend to pursue individuals who used CBD oil. While CBD oil devotees aren’t fully in the clear, the tide does seem to be turning on this substance.

Safety of CBD Oil

Although the U.S. has yet to make CBD oil legal at the national level, an increasing amount of research reveals that the substance is safe to use. According to a report by the World Health Organization, CBD is generally safe and well tolerated by both humans and animals. Further, the substance offers impressive health benefits.

In rare cases, CBD users may experience side effects, though they are usually mild. If you opt to use CBD, be on the lookout for the following:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea or stomach upset
  • Appetite changes

If you have any preexisting conditions or are currently taking prescription medication, talk to your doctor to find out if you can take CBD oil safely.
